Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour preferably soft wheat flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1.5 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1.75 cups buttermilk cold

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Stir with a wooden spoon until dough starts to come together.
  • Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead gently just until a rough ball forms. Do not over-knead.
  • Place dough ball on prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross on top, about 1/2 inch deep.
  • Bake for 35-45 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool on a wire rack before slicing. Best served with butter.

Notes

This traditional Irish Soda Bread is best eaten fresh but can also be toasted the next day. For added authenticity, use soft wheat flour, which is more common in Ireland.
